All Workers

The most common way people enter the IBEW is through the apprenticeship.  Each classification represented by IBEW 684 has an apprenticeship program, and there are application processes for each.  However, many electricians & installers start in the trade unrepresented and un-affiliated with the IBEW.  We honor that experience and have provided a method for membership for those electrical workers.  

Sound & Communication  

Incoming installers are asked to have accumulated and prove 6,000 on-the-job hours and pass the Basic Knowledge of Electronic Systems exam along with 1 of the 4 following exams: Voice/Data, Audio/Visual, Security, Fire Alarm/Life Safety.  The passing grade for the exams is 70% or higher.  

Electricians, what is the 9th District test and why? (for electricians only)

The 9th District test is given to incoming journeyman wiremen who have accumulated, and must be able to prove, at least 8,000 on-the-job hours and don't hold or have held a State Certification for under 5-years.  If you've held an active State Certification for 5-years or more you are exempt from taking the exam.  The exam is a 5-part, 4 hands on and 1 common knowledge written test of the electrical trade.  It is designed to measure an incoming electrician's strengths and weaknesses (if any) in the trade, also, to help the union place the electrician with the appropriate signatory contractor for success.
