NORCAL NECA-IBEW 684 PARTNERSHIP HONORS 53 ELECTRICIANS FOR COMPLETING INNOVATIVE CODE OF EXCELLENCE TRAINING PROGRAM

MODESTO, CA—(June 9, 2009)— The NorCal NECA-IBEW 684 Partnership recently awarded certification to 53 area electricians for completing innovative training for the Code of Excellence, a best practices construction program that guarantees the highest quality electrical construction work to customers.

The Partnership is a joint alliance between the National Electrical Contractors Association, Northern California Chapter, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 684 in Modesto. The awards were given at the Gallo Performing Arts Center in Modesto on June 3rd by NECA and IBEW officials.

The NorCal NECA-IBEW 684 Partnership adopted the Code of Excellence some 18 months ago as part of a national directive for the electrical construction industry that mandates the use of best work practices and the highest standards of personal conduct at the building site.

After adopting the Code of Excellence, The NorCal NECA-IBEW 684 Partnership became the first NECA-IBEW alliance in the nation to require additional training for certification.

Several area electrical contractors participated in the awards ceremony, addressing the importance of the Code of Excellence and confirming their commitment to the highest quality for customers. Contractors who presented included Collins Electrical Company, Hamilton & Dillon Electric, and Mann Electric.

The Code of Excellence awards program was introduced by Patty Hill-Thomas, Chief Operations Officer for Stanislaus County. She thanked the NorCal NECA-IBEW 684 Partnership for “focusing on excellence and continuous improvement.”

“This Code of Excellence is superior to any other program in the US, mainly because of our training,” said Pete Halver, Manager of the Northern California Chapter of NECA.

“Through the Code of Excellence, we are offering our customers the highest standards of electrical construction,” said Billy Powell, Business Manager of IBEW Local 684. “The Code of Excellence assures customers that labor and management are working together for quality, on time and on budget.”

The Code of Excellence training requirements for electricians include a COE introduction training session, OSHA 10 and CPR/First aid training, Electrical Project Supervision, and also completion of one additional continuing education class every six months. Foreman are required to complete OSHA 30 training, additional classes in Electrical Project Supervision, NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the workplace, and Supervisor Harassment Training.

Code of Excellence training for electrical contractors includes participation in three electrical project supervision classes, as well as preconstruction planning.

National leaders for NECA and IBEW praised the local program, citing its strong training component as well as its rigorous enforcement. “Your decision to bring the Code of Excellence program to your customers speaks loudly to your leadership of your area,” said Rex A Ferry, President of the National Electrical Contractors Association. “On time and on budget means a win-win for all involved—owner, contractor, and electrician.”

Edwin D. Hill, President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, congratulated the Partnership for seeking to be “the best in America, involved with continuous improvement and excellence for the sake of the customers.”
